About the team

Amahl and Kerry

Amahl Pitts is a licensed insurance producer by trade. He is a lifelong resident of Harrisburg and a graduate of The Milton Hershey School. Kerry MacDearmid is a farmer and traditionally trained educator originally from New England. Amahl and Kerry met at The Milton Hershey School as students but went separate ways after graduation.  In 2021 Kerry returned to Pennsylvania and the two were reacquainted and began to brainstorm about ways to help the city regarding its current food desert status.   Together, in 2022, they garnered the support of over 130 volunteers and began the City FARM Project. In just two months, as an example of the possible, the group converted the old run-down football stadium at the old Bishop McDevitt Hight School into a high-yielding community garden. They used the garden as a mouthpiece to educate the community to the issues of food insecurity and produced over 2000 pounds of vegetables which were donated to the community. They have since started TURF Inc., a non-profit organization, and are now in the business of working toward food equity for Harrisburg.
